| Yakoob Sheikh (1965 - 1969) |
I joined Eastleigh Secondary School from Juja Road Primary in 1965. My favourite sport was Hockey. I played for the school hockey team and we won many tournaments and leagues, including the Kesar Singh Cup, beating Ramgharia Sports Club in the final. I played for the school hockey team against Germany and for the Muslim Club against Pakistan. I played mostly as a full back but sometimes in the goal. I liked athletics and did well in winning Shot Put and Discus in inter-school competitions. Mr Hashmi got me selected into the school Football team as well.
I was selected in the Kenya Hockey squad as a goal keeper. I captained Sir Ali Muslim Club hockey team for a long time. We were one of the youngest teams ever to win the National League. I also played hockey for Aryans and Khalsa Sports Club where we won all but one of the tournaments and leagues for three years running. I also played snooker, volleyball and cricket for club teams. I was the club snooker captain. We won the club tournament and were in the top 16 in Kenya, I also captained SAMC volleyball second team.
My last hockey match in Kenya before I left was as Captain of Parklands Sports Club. The 12 years I spent there were really very enjoyable. I still play for Slough Hockey Club where I was made Player of the Season 2015/2016. I credit all my achievements to the support and guidance of Mr Hashmi.
