Art and Design |
Art and Design classes at Eastleigh High School have 78 students in total, ranging from Form One to Form Four. After passing their KNEC final examinations they manage to join various Art and Design related courses at either the university or at one of the tertiary colleges. Many of them use their creativity to earn a living
Preparing for this year’s KNEC Examinations, 13 students tackled the mosaic theme depicting a hen and its chicks using egg shells. The examination encourages the use of locally available materials like egg shells to reduce on the cost.
Students collected egg shells from their localities. They painted the egg shells based on each student proposed colour scheme. Using a strong adhesive like wood glue, they applied and pasted the shells on to the design skilfully with accuracy and precision. Once the work was fully done, they framed it. They used clear varnish on the frame to preserve and maintain it. It took each student a total of 2 months to complete the Art work. The work will be marked based on a range of criteria including its aesthetic value.
In the accompanying photographs, you will see a range of mosaics that have been produced using egg shells and depicting the theme ‘The Birds’. The wall hanging egg shells mosaic theme was achieved under the guidance and supervision of Mrs Lucy Mbero, the Art and Design teacher at Eastleigh High School, Nairobi.
The single pencil drawing depicts housing in a slum area near Eastleigh nicknamed ‘Biafra’ - that some students come from. |
