Ravinder Bhalla (1964 - 1967) |
I studied at Racecourse Primary before joining ESS in 1964. As my brother was already a good Volleyball player, I followed in his footsteps. I was also encouraged by my friend Babubhai Patel to join school the Volleyball team and soon started excelling in it. Nick named 'KOLA' by my friends,I was the Vice Captain in 1965 while in Form 2 and was the Captain in 1966 and 1967. I was also the school Athletics Captain – Discus and Shot Putt being my forte.
I was selected to represent the national team in 1967 and went with them to Kiganjo Army Barracks for training. Here I interacted with national icons like KipchogeKeino, NaftaliTemu and Wilson Kiprugut, who all decided to stick with Athletics rather than play Volleyball!
I came to the UK in 1968 and played Volleyball for the Greater London team in the inter-county championships. I joined British Airways at Heathrow and worked for them for a long time, taking every opportunity to travel round the world!
I now enjoy mountain trekking and have trekked in Spain, Mt Kenya, Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Everest Base Camp, Indian and Nepali Himalayas etc. I am now retired (early) and spend my time visiting friends all over the world as well as enjoying our two lovely grandchildren. I would welcome any friends who remember me (looking for Babubhai from 1965 especially) to get in touch and meet up for a chat and a laugh over beer and NyamaChoma!
