Mahendra S Patel (1965-1968) |
I was born in Nairobi and went to Racecourse Primary, Eastleigh Secondary and Jamhuri High schools. Mostly fantastic teachers and many friends from these schools helped develop a sound and balanced view of the wider world which has served me well throughout my life. I earned a BSc from Bradford and a PhD from Cambridge, both in Chemical Engineering and joined the oil business (Texaco, then Shell) in the US. In this truly global business I took assignments in New York, Houston, Bangalore/Kuala Lumpur and headed engineering teams working on projects from Alaska to Russia and travelled around the world. I spent 7 years in Bangalore setting up Shell’s Technology Centre from scratch to 1,100 engineers & scientists; a fantastic life experience. I retired last year and live at 11,200 ft in Alma in the Colorado Rockies.
I married Heidi from Switzerland and we have a daughter and a son, both working in the US. Our daughter just bought the highest saloon in the USA, the South Park Saloon in Alma, and I'm working harder than I ever did at Shell to help get it going smoothly! I've been fortunate to meet many of my ESS & JHS friends as I passed through London on my travels over the past 35 years and enjoyed the instant connections we made as we shared stories about our teachers & schools. I captained the cricket teams at ESS, JHS and the Nairobi Combined Schools and continued to play at university and club level.
