| Adarsh Varma (1952 - 1955) |
I was born and bred in Kenya in a Punjabi family in 1938. My mother Yashoda was very well known in the community and many friends lovingly called her "Soda". My father Dasraj was a very saintly man.
I had my pre-primary education in the premises of a double-storied teachers' training school in 1943. I vividly remember my elder brother holding my hand and taking me to this school on my first day. My first impression was of fear! How would I cope with the constant beating of pupils by the teachers!! My primary education was at the Asian Primary School where I went until 1951. I have fond memories of this school. I was a keen athlete and won many first prizes for running.
In 1952 we were the first batch who moved to the then Racecourse Secondary School. I was a keen volleyball player and played with the likes of "Kaklee". I took a keen interest in football and played in Full Back position. I played an active part in the success story of Nile House. Our 1955 Senior Cambridge results were the best in the country and we felt rightly proud of this achievement.
At last those wonderful and carefree youthful days came to an end in 1959 when I got married to Suraksha. We moved to the UK in 1962. We have two daughters and a son and 6 grand children.
