| Zahoor Ahmed Saif-ur-Rahman (1960 - 1963) |
I was born in Nairobi in 1947 and attended Park Road Primary School before going to ESS in 1960, leaving in 1963. I joined the Royal Air Force in Nairobi in 1963 and subsequently trained for 3 years as an Aircraft Apprentice in the trade of airframes at RAF Halton, England. I got my Ordinary National Certificate in Engineering with distinctions at RAF Halton. I passed out as top apprentice in my trade and I was selected to complete a 5 year Engineering Officer training at RAF College Cranwell. I was commissioned in 1969. This was followed by BSc (Hons) in aeronautical engineering. I obtained MRAeS and CEng status. I worked on many military fighter and transport aircraft until 1985 at which point I took early retirement. I then joined the Civil Service but had to take early retirement at the age of 50 years on grounds of ill health.
I played hockey for the RAF and played cricket for my village team. At ESS I was a Scout Troop Leader and went on to obtain Queen Scout award. I also did the Duke of Edinburgh’s gold award and was privilege to receive it from the Duke at Buckingham Palace in 1965.
I married an English girl, Christine, whom I met whilst at RAF College Cranwell and we had two boys. Unfortunately she passed away in 2012 after a long illness.
I am now fully retired and living in Oxfordshire. Although I no longer play cricket, I never miss a test match game on the TV!
