I studied at Eastleigh Primary, Eastleigh Secondary and Jamhuri High schools. I came to London in 1970, read Electronics & Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University. I later re-trained as a Chartered Accountant working at Arthur Andersen until its demise in 2002 and then at Deloitte LLP until 2012 when I retired from professional life. I served on the Global Board of partners at Arthur Andersen for 3 years and as a Board member of Deloitte LLP for 2 years later becoming Vice Chairman.
I have two sons, Adam and Max who graduated in Computer Science from Kings College, London and in Mathematics from Exeter University respectively. My brother Assad also attended Eastleigh Secondary School. I was a Boy Scout, a member of the photographic society and the debating society. I also exhibited at the annual Model Making competition run by Mr Xavier D’Souza.
We were taught by some of the most inspiring teachers including, Mr Mendonca, Mr Saleh Mamon, Mr Ian Sandilands, Mr Hashmi, Mr Xavier D’Souza, Mr Khanna, Mr Briggs, Mr Carvalho, Mr Bev Young, Mr Shant and Mr Matharu amongst others. Although I learnt photography at home, my skills were further developed at school under Mr Matharu’s leadership of the photographic society, introducing me to the magic of the photographic darkroom. This interest has continued unabated and a selection of my work can be viewed at www.terryawan.com. This includes some wildlife photographs shot in East Africa. I have many fond memories of my friends and times at ESS.
