| Sohan Singh Dhanjal (1963 - 1966) |
I joined ESS in January 1963 from Racecourse Primary School. I found the new environment quite intimidating and it took a few months to get settled. I was known as Soni in the school. I was a keen athlete, joined the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award group and was a Boy Scout as well. I also played hockey for the school team and cricket for Nile House. I became a school Prefect in Form 3 and was appointed Head Prefect in Form 4.
After passing my Senior Cambridge Examinations in December 1966, I left Kenya and came to UK in January 1967 and started my A-levels. I joined University College London in 1968 and obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering. After that I joined Accountancy profession where after working for a small accountancy firm for my initial training, I joined a major food retailer where I worked for over 35 years. Owing to health reasons I took early retirement in 2008 at the age of 59. However the health issues that have now, thankfully, disappeared after retirement!
I am married to Gurdarshan and we have been living in Bristol for over 30 years. We have two sons; the older is married. We have two lovely grandchildren and we spend a fair amount of our time looking after them. I have recently started learning to play the Harmonium from our local priest in the Gurdwara where I also get the opportunity to sing.
