Karamjit Singh Bharij (1962-1967)

I was born in Eastleigh, Nairobi and went to Eastleigh Primary School. I remember our teacher Mr.Ram Parkash Sharda who used to take us on visits to factories, museums, dairies and the airport. Forty years later, recently I had an opportunity to talk to him on Skype face to face!

I went to Duke of Gloucester School. Our teachers took pride in ensuring that their students produced the best results. Hence the good foundation of my life was laid by them. After that, I joined my elder brother in Scotland. What a cultural shock it was! I could not understand a word of their spoken English! I moved to Manchester and joined an insurance company. I qualified with FCII and joined a French company. I was seconded to cover their West African operations and travelled extensively throughout West Africa. I spent seven years in there based in Lagos- Nigeria.

Upon return to UK, I found that insurance industry was heavily computerised and career prospects were abysmal. I did a degree in Marketing and Business in Europe including PGCE. I spent seventeen years in an academic career as a lecturer teaching both in further and higher education.

I left this profession two years ago and went full time into photojournalism and photography. I am joint administrator of Nairobi Asians Living Abroad group on Face Book. This group has re-connected members world-wide who once lived in East Africa.
