Nilesh Raithatha (1969-1972) |
I was born in Nairobi and did my primary education at Juja Road Primary Before joining Eastleigh Secondary School in 1969.
At ESS, my favourite subjects were mathematics and English Literature. I got the First Prize in mathematics in each of my four years at ESS. I was a school Prefect. I was a member of the school Debating Society. I ended up with the top 'O' level result in the school in my final year.
My best friends at school were Kiran Patel, Sailesh Jani and Zoeb Gulamali. Together, we had plenty of ‘out of school’ experiences. I cannot forget my mathematical challenges with Gabriel with whom I have lost contact. The teachers who inspired me the most were Mr Hashmi for his no nonsense attitude and Mr Mendonca for his flamboyant theatrical teaching style in Literature. In hindsight the four years at this school were probably the most influential years of my life.
I completed my A levels at Harrow Technical College followed by my degree in Ophthalmic Optics at Glasgow. Within two years of getting my professional qualifications, I became the owner of two optical practices - one of which I sold at the age 54. I have since worked part time at the other practice and used my newly found spare time playing golf, walking, swimming, attending gym classes and holidaying.
I am married to a lovely lady, Mina. We have two boys Anish and Amit both of whom are medical doctors in local hospitals.
