We were the first batch to be admitted to this brand-new ESS situated "in the middle of nowhere" -a large expanse of land, rolling black-cotton hillocks, surrounded on the west by a horse cum auto race-course and on the east by the British Air Force base and Eastleigh Airport.
When I joined ESS, I was an average student, a rather shy lad who kept a low profile. Then, all of a sudden, a transformation took place. From being a back-bencher in my class in Form 2E, I leapt to the top of my class and found myself sitting on the front desk in Form 3A. It was a metamorphosis into a book-worm; a nerd in present day terminology! Not being much of a sportsman (in any case, the new school was devoid of any sports facilities) I don’t remember my House - possibly ‘NIGER’.
After graduating from school I proceeded to read Medicine at King Edward Medical College, Lahore. I returned to Kenya with postings in Nairobi, Mombasa, Lama, Kampala (where I took my FRCS primary), Mandera/Moyale (Flying Doctor Service), Machakos, Kisii and Nyeri. After specializing in the UK in Orthopaedic Surgery I returned to Kenya and married Sadia - a charismatic science teacher who enchanted me through her bio chemistry! We have two boys and a girl.
I attribute my success to the dedication of and inspiration from my teachers; the camaraderie of my childhood school and classmates and doubtless, the school motto: “Industry & Integrity."
