I was born in Nairobi and attended City Primary, Juja Road Primary and Eastleigh Secondary schools.
At ESS, ours was a Gujarati class and we stayed together from Form 1C up to Form 4C. I was a good athlete, winning the long jump and relay in form 2 Then, as we progressed, I was school champion for mile/880 yards and cross country in Form 3 and Form 4, where I broke the school record for 880 yards (2m 11s). I also played hockey and cricket for the school first teams.
After leaving school, I attended a teacher training course but left after 3 months to join East African Airways as an electronic/electrical engineer apprentice. During my six years at East African Airways, I played hockey and cricket for reputable clubs and for East African Airways. I scored 7 centuries out of nine matches and joined Premier Club batting at number 3. I was hoping to play for Kenya but, in a cruel twist of fate, had to leave for the UK in 1968 during the Asian Exodus.
I worked for BOAC (now British Airways) as an electronic/electrical engineer and completed my HNC/HND in the evenings. I played a lot of hockey and cricket for British Airways and travelled a great deal. I retired in 2009.
I am married to Lila. We have one son, Neal, who is married to Kruti and they have two children, Sienna and Riyan. We now lead a peaceful, retired life in Uxbridge, Middlesex.
