My forefathers settled in East Africa in the early twentieth century. I was born in Nairobi and attended Nairobi South Primary School. In 1962, I proceeded on to Highway Secondary School until 1967, where I undertook the Senior Cambridge “A Levels”.
I have always had a passion for sports. At school, I played cricket, football, table- tennis and represented the school hockey team. From 1965 to 1967, I went on to play hockey for the Combined Schools of Kenya. Our Combined Schools team of 1967 featured against the elite international Pakistani team. This was a rewarding experience.
I was an enthusiastic boy scout and enjoyed exploring the outdoors. I took on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 1964 as part of the Outward Bound Mountain Course.
In 1968, we left Kenya and settled in the UK. I went on to study Pharmacy at Sunderland Polytechnic from where I graduated in 1973. A few years later, I started my own business in Pharmacy and pursued this career until my retirement a few years ago.
In spite of my business and domestic commitments, my love for sport has inspired me to travel to myriad global sporting events including: hockey; cricket; football and Olympic Games. I have been a beneficiary of great friendships and experiences from these expeditions.
My wife Gurdial practises as an optometrist. We have three daughters and six grandchildren who keep us enjoyably occupied.
