Balbir Singh Panesar (1958 - 1961) |
I was born in India, my family moved to Nairobi in 1950. I was only 8 years old and the journey from Mumbai to Mombasa by ship took us one month. I went to City Primary School where I did my KPE. After this I joined Eastleigh Secondary. I had the best time of my life at ESS. Apart from studying I played a lot of sports. I went on to Duke of Gloucester School where I did my Form 5 and 6 studies. After this I joined Kenya Polytechnic and got my A Levels.
I took a year off after Kenya Polytechnic and took up a teaching post at Visa Oshwal Secondary School. It was good fun but I wanted to go into further education. I decided to go to Nairobi University when I finished my teaching job. However, I was not completely happy at Nairobi University and decided to come to the UK. I went to University College of Swansea, a part of University of Wales. I met some of my old colleagues from ESS at UCS. I graduated from UCS in 1968 with an Honours degree in Electronics.
I was a very keen sports person. My parents often said that I only went to school so I could play sports. I was a good athlete and played football, cricket, volleyball and hockey. I was also the Prefect, a Scout and Captain of Congo House in 1961.
